My alias was `Phoenix. 90% of the time I was playing siege with a bit of arena as well. Played siege ladder with wow! (wookiees of war).
Of the big names I played a bit with - Phoenix - and we played in a team hunters (lol) tribe together, can't remember the name at all but we only played like 3 matches (absolute stomps) before the ladder collapsed haha. Met some other bigger names through them and all the people that stuck around on the arena scene. Played as disembodied head around 2008 on the arena server but my new computer won't run tribes 2 anymore and I am too addicted to dota now anyways.
ECTS isn't all about touring the House of Lords and stopping off at Auntie Lunn's for some hot buns. No, there's work to be done and games to be seen.
One of the titles that travelling boy reporter Tal Blevins seemed drawn to was the upcoming. We're all big fans of the first game and we've been very eager to see what the next installment has to offer. And now that we've seen it, we can pass it along to you. We've got three new movies taken on the show floor of the game in action. The first is your basic duel - two warriors fighting against each other. The second movie showcases the fantastic death animation in the game and the last movie spotlights the new cloaking pack and all it's various uses - okay, there's really only one use for the pack, but it's so darn fun it seems like more. Scroll down to check out the movies and be sure to read Tal's impressions below.- IGN Staff.
ECTS 2000 Update September 1, 2000As you probably already know, Tribes is one of our favorite shooters around the office. Many a late night are still spent here after hours capturing flags, raiding bases, and plowing scouts into enemy heavies just for fun.
Given our love of the original Tribes, we were curious to see how the sequel was progressing. And after playing some today, I can confirm that the folks at have been busy, busy, busy.and the game is coming along quite nicely. The first thing I noticed when I sat down is that the game looks a lot better than it did at E3.
The team at Dynamix wasn't happy with the visual quality of Tribes 2, so they recently overhauled the graphics engine. Not only did this make the game look better, but it also served to speed up the game as well.
I can definitely notice a big difference. Since the last time I saw Tribes 2, the textures look tighter, the lighting effects look more brilliant, and everything just looks smoother. One of the biggest graphical changes can be found in the bases themselves. While the base walls were very flat and square in the original, Tribes 2 sees the additions of curved surfaces.
These curved walls make traversing narrow vertical tunnels much easier than in Tribes as the bottom and top of the chutes are now curved, alleviating the problem of getting snagged on a hard edge and wasting precious energy. We also got to see some of the new character animations, like a full body spin and high leg kick. Sure, it doesn't add much to gameplay, but the new gestures look awesome, and can be effective taunting tools just to piss the opposing team off.Although we didn't get to see it in action, we were told that the team has also been working on dynamic weather patterns for the game.
Now instead of having a level where it's raining or snowing continuously, storm fronts will move in and out during a match, adding a whole new gameplay element into the mix. While the graphical changes were a welcomed surprise, we also learned that Dynamix had retooled the physics engine to give it a better feel. They just weren't happy with how the vehicles responded in the game. After playing around with the vehicles in an early Tribes 2 build, I can tell you that I for one am glad they went back and re-evaluated the physics model. The buggies just seemed too bouncy and difficult to control. While playing the ECTS demo, we got to use some of the new items that they've recently implemented into the game. First off, there's a whole new bevy of innovative grenades that are going to change the strategies currently used by Tribes players. There's a concussion grenade that will stun players for a brief time as well as a flash grenade that will blind your opponents.
And the new camera grenades are a great way to carry multiple cameras without having to waste a pack slot. There's also a handy-dandy sticky mine that will cling to any surface. Those of you frustrated by your teammates stepping on your carefully placed mines will be happy to know that all mines will now be smart and won't blow up when someone on your team is near. The new items are sure to create new tactics for the game, but the team has also been more mindful of level design and how that affects gameplay strategies this time around. Whereas bases in the original usually only had one or two entrances, the bases in Tribes 2 will have multiple entry points, making defense that much more challenging. We also learned that generators will supply power to specific systems, so you'll have to find specific gens to take out certain systems. And if all of your gens get knocked out, you will be warned with emergency lighting and a noticeable silence since the gens will no longer be humming throughout your base.Since it is such a community-based game, Dynamix is hoping that the mod community will embrace the game and create new missions and maps with the advanced and relatively easy to use editing tools that will be included with the game.
End users won't even have to download the maps from a website. Since the actual map data is under 100kb, they can easily be transferred over your connection when you log into a game. After seeing the game at ECTS, we have no doubt that Tribes 2 will be the shooter to beat this fall. Tribes 2 looks absolutely amazing, and is going to be the game to justify your multiplayer existence. It plays well even in its un-optimized state, and the new items are going to keep Tribes strategists busy for a while. Now if we could just get our hands on some final code.- Tal Blevins. April 6, 2000Given our extremely positive, it probably doesn't come as much of a surprise that we're excited about Dynamix's upcoming sequel to the online-only shooter. Much to our delight, Mark Frohnmayer, Software Engineer on Tribes 2, dropped by our offices today to give us a little pre-E3 glimpse at what the Dynamix team has been working on for the past few months. You may be asking yourself, 'Why is Tribes 2 taking so long?'
Well, there are quite a few reasons actually. For starters, there were a number of staff changes since the inception of the Tribes 2 project. I'm sure most of you already know that Lead Designer Scott Youngblood left for Electronic Arts last year, but the Tribes 2 team has also seen the addition of a new Producer.
Dave Georgeson, who was the Producer on Heavy Gear II, joined Dynamix last month. Another big stepping stone was the addition of the single-player missions to the game, something the team learned while trying to develop the never-to-be released Tribes Extreme.
'With Tribes Extreme we found that it was much harder to program jetpack AI than we thought it would be,' explained Mark today. Toonstruck walkthrough. 'In a typical shooter, the AI is basically limited to moving on a 2D plane, either left, right, backwards, or forwards. But with Tribes, you add the jetpack which allows you to go anywhere, so we've just been working with the computer AI to make sure we get it right.' Because of the rigors of developing 3D AI, the team decided it would be a better choice to scrap the Tribes Extreme project and transfer what they had learned so far into Tribes 2.Now all of this computer-controlled bot talk sounds pretty exciting to those of use who have been waiting to play some Tribes 2 without having to get online.
The promise of practicing your Tribes skills before jumping into the heated human competition is certainly something we're looking forward to, but the new stand-alone missions will not only be useful to get some single-player practice. You can also get your entire tribe in for a little practice against computer-controlled opponents, working out team strategies in the process. This is where things really get exciting. And not only can your tribe challenge an entire team of bots, but you also might have a few on your side on some servers. The bot technology promises to add features like keeping a 16-person server running at capacity at all times. If someone leaves, you can simply set-up the server so a bot replaces that person, and if someone logs into the game later, that person will take the bot's place. This way you can always have a full game going on, no matter how many human players are actually playing on a server. In addition to developing solid 3D AI routines, another big part of Tribes 2 was optimizing the network code to be the best it could possibly be.
'We've found a lot of the bottleneck problems in our network code, and we've fixed those and we're really happy with what we have now,' Mark told us. The dev team looked at where a lot of the network problems were, and found that they mainly lay in elements taking too much away from CPU usage on the server, so they've decreased the amount of strain that Tribes 2 will put on the CPU. Mark even said that they're hoping to get 64-player games running flawlessly with a fast enough server, no matter what type of network connection you have.Although Tribes is a squad-based game, sometimes it seemed like you just couldn't get people to work as an effectual team.
One of the biggest drawbacks to coordinating competent strategies was trying to effectively communicate with all of your team members while being chased by plasma-happy MaDHouZ. Well this time around Dynamix wants to increase team cooperation. One way of doing this is by simply making communication easier in the sequel. Not only will Tribes 2 support voice over the 'Net technology, but the team has also completely revamped the communications system to make it less complex than before. They've added location specific communication now which works a little something like this.
Let's say your generator needs repairs. In Tribes, you would yell, 'Need repairs!' But unless you typed a personal message after that, chances are your teammates would never know what needed repaired. Now you can specifically define what needs to be repaired by pointing at it and screaming, 'Need repairs!' Now anyone who answers with 'acknowledged' will be given a waypoint as to what needs repairing.
This locations specific communication system is also very useful if you just captured the flag and you 'need an escort back to base.' Now instead of players having to open the map and look for your flag-carrying ass, they can simply 'acknowledge' your cammand and they'll instantly get a waypoint showing them where you are. It's a simple yet brilliant system.Another way they're going about doing this encouraging the community to meet and greet within the confines of the game. 'Instead of keeping everything outside of the game, we want to make the process of creating and maintaining a tribe much easier in Tribes 2 than it was in the first game,' Mark told us. 'In Tribes you needed a webpage, an email list, ICQ, and all of this other stuff just to keep your tribe organized, and now we're putting everything you need to coordinate your tribe in the game.' The team has also looked into new ways to foster specific team strategies.
For example, in the original Tribes, the targeting laser didn't factor in someone's movement rate. Now the targeting laser will compensate for motion, so you can shoot while running or riding a vehicle. By doing this, they are hoping that more people will work together as a painter/heavy-hitter combo. While Mark had plenty to tell us about the features that we're going to see when Tribes 2 ships, a big part of the demo we saw today focused on the terrain editor that Dynamix will ship with the final game. What caught our attention early on was how easy the editing tool was to use. You want to raise the terrain? Just click on the area and pull the mouse back.
Instant mountain. What to add landscape textures? Simply define your terrain types by height and the editing tool does all the necessary blending to make the landscape look right. Many years ago game download. In today's demonstration we picked sand at the lower elevations, craggy rock at medium elevations, and ice for the highest altitudes. What we got was a picture-perfect desert locale with a few frosty peaks.and all of this took less than 30 seconds.
The same thing can be done with fog in the game. Simply define how dense and at what elevation you want it to hang and you've got instant fog. Plus the user can define varying degrees of fog density based on elevation, so you may have some thick soup resting in the valleys with only a light mist in the hills. With powerful and easy-to-use tools like this shipping with the game we expect to see hundreds and hundreds of maps available for Tribes 2 within the first few weeks of shipping.A slick addition to the normal texture sets will be the addition of natural hazards to the Tribes universe. There will be three types of hazards in the game: quicksand, lava, and lightning. With the exception of lava, which will burn right through your armor and reduce you to little more than ash, the hazards won't be deadly to the players, they'll only be a nuisance.
Quicksand will slow you down and lightning will drain your energy (and possibly cause some damage in the process, but not enough to kill a player with full health). As Mark explains it, 'What we ideally want is for players to kill players, not hazards to kill players.' The lightning effect sounds really cool, actually, because Mark told us that it will seek out the player at the highest point in a particular area. So just think about the possibilities of being airborne and getting struck by lighting only to have your energy drained, rendering your jetpack useless. See you in hell, MaDHouZ.We also got an update on the state of the Tribes 2 arsenal.
Mark told us that the Dynamix team will be keeping all of the original weapons, but they are also looking to add three new implements of destruction. Although the details on these are sketchy at this point since even the Dynamix team hasn't decided exactly what they're going to add, Mark did tell us about at least one of the new weapons - a rocket launcher. While not as powerful as the mortar, the rocket launcher will be completely guideable, so you can use it to target specific structures or track moving vehicles. It sounds very cool so far. There will also be one new pack, the environ pack, which will allow you to traverse hostile terrains like water without taking any damage.
While this is the only totally new pack the team is looking to add, Mark told us that they wil be modifying a lot of the existing packs, like the sensor jammer. The sensor jammer will now include a cloak function which will make your player nearly invisible, but at high energy costs. As if this weren't enough, we also had a chance to see some of the new vehicles that are going to be in the game, such as the scout buggy and the three-man assault vehicle. While the scout buggy was an agile, one-man ground vehicle, the assault vehicles will have spaces for a driver, gunner, and passenger, so hopefully this will only further increase the benefits of superior teamwork in Tribes 2. Tribes players will be happy to know that Dynamix has answered their cries for better vehicle modeling. 'We just weren't completely happy with the vehicles in the original Tribes,' explained Mark. 'So we're going to be adding a lot more bounce and roll to the vehicles to make them more fun to drive.'
When asked about water vehicles, Mark told us that the team was looking into making the ground vehicles amphibious so they can be used as slow yet effective gunboats. Sounds cool to us!As far as a definite release date goes, all we could get out of Mark was that the game will be out sometime before the end of 2000. The team at Dynamix wants to make sure they have the very best game possible before they ship, and from what we saw today, they're well on their way to making that promise a reality. We'll definitely be spending a lot of time at the Dynamix booth this May at E3, so look for even more details on Tribes 2 then.- Tal Blevins. May 13, 1999 E3 UpdateI just got back from the Dynamix Starsiege Universe Assault Vehicle and all I can say is woowie-zoowie. I got to try out Tribes 2 in the comfort of an air-conditioned mini RV equipped with full surround Dolby, a 48' projection screen and comfy, comfy seats.
All I want to know is where can I get one of those puppies and how much does it cost? Anyway, enough about the cool van.
Let me get on to the game.Dynamix only had one playable level on display and they haven't integrated any of the new weaponry, items or packs yet, but Lead Designer Scott Youngblood took us through some of the graphical improvements to the game and things are definitely looking superb at this point. The main improvements that I saw today lie in changes to the visual atmosphere of the game.
The level Scott designed for E3 included trees, tighter landscape details, 3D surface modeled water and lightning strikes that will injure you if you get struck. As Scott described it, 'We're trying to include more environmental hazards so you feel like you're in a real world rather than just a lifeless landscape.'
Another big improvement that Tribes 2 will offer is getting rid of the morphing mountains that appear out of nowhere as you get closer to them. Now terrain features will remain stable and there will be no averaging of heights at a distance. The individual characters have also been given an overhaul with higher polygon counts so they look smoother and more detailed than before. And Tribes 2 will introduce a brand new tribe into the mix, the BioDerms, a genetically engineered race of former human slaves whose ultimate goal is to destroy mankind. As I mentioned earlier, there were no new weapons included at this stage, but most of the weapon effects and the weapons themselves have been given graphical retouches. The new weapon models look great (especially the plasma gun, complete with lighted plasma chamber) and the new effects are looking pretty nifty at this point. Scott did hint that there would be 3-5 new weapons, but they had no set ideas as to what they would be as of yet. He said the dev team would have to test each idea carefully to make sure optimum balance is kept between the new armaments and the weapons from the original game.Oh yeah, and get this. There will be a number of ground and water based vehicles in Tribes 2 as well.
One ground vehicle that I saw is a two person dune buggy with a big-ass honkin' cannon where one person will drive and the other will act as gunner.Other new additions include at least 30 new multiplayer maps, real time voice communication, realistic water physics, new items, new packs and the option to set up multiplay games with bots. This means that if you only have one friend in the whole wide world, you can still duke it out in a full 16-on-16 game. You control one team with 15 bots and (s)he'll control the other. Come here my minions. Go forth and destroy!Things are still very early in the Tribes 2 development process and Dynamix isn't even expecting to get this one out the door until early next year, so you'll be waiting a little while. Expect to hear a lot more about Tribes 2 on IGNPC after the show and look for an interview with Scott Youngblood on the site soon.- Tal Blevins.
