The Lawless Breed is based on the exploits of Texas bad man John Wesley Hardin, played here quite convincingly by Rock Hudson. The film takes the Cecil B. DeMille approach of condemning evil by showing as much evil as the censor will allow. Early-west gunman, John Wesley Hardin, has his life put on film in The Lawless Breed. Presumably based on Hardin’s actual story of his career, published when he was released from a Texas prison after serving 16 years for killing a law man, the production has plenty of robust action stirred up by Raoul Walsh’s direction.
The plot unfolds episodically and swiftly, telling how Hardin earned his reputation as a killer after getting his first victim in self defense, goes on the lam from the law and vengeance-seeking kinfolks, is forced into more killings, loses his sweetheart (Mary Castle) to a posse’s bullets and acquires a new one in Julie Adams, the girl who later becomes his wife. Rock Hudson does a very good job of the main character, and Adams makes much of her femme lead. John McIntire scores in dual roles, one as Hardin’s overly-righteous, preacher father, and the other as the gunman’s uncle.
The music is a techno mix that fits the tribal combat but most players will probably keep it off so that they can hear the footsteps of approaching enemies and other important sounds. One area of the sound department that is, for the most part, a failure is the in-game voice communication. Tribes 2 game. It has rarely been seen used and when it is most people come across garbled.
Abused by his stern preacher father, John Wesley Hardin (Rock Hudson) leaves home hoping to make his way in the world and marry his fiancee (Mary Castle). His efforts lead to a fight in a gambling establishment where he kills a man in self-defense and is forced run from the law. When a group of men murders his fiancee, Wes is led to marry a local showgirl instead (Julie Adams), in hopes of continuing his luckless quest for a normal life. When he is finally imprisoned, it will be sixteen years before he sees his newly-born son who may be following in his father's footsteps.
